STUDENTS & TEACHERS

The Southern Environmental Center (SEC) serves as a regional resource for environmental information. Visitors may participate in the Interactive Museum and outdoor classroom facility (EcoScape) as they learn how their actions can improve and protect the environment.
Exhibits include docent-guided tours taking visitors past a series of interactive exhibits dealing with ground-level ozone. Others deal with transportation alternatives, and the center manages a demonstration bicycle program on campus. A custom designed presentation on ground-level ozone can be prepared based on the level of your students.

The Ozone Action Program is designed to educate students about the health effects and economic impact of ground-level ozone and what can be done to help prevent its formation. The ultimate goal of the program is to help clean the air by reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), essential precursors in the formation of ground-level ozone. The JCDH, in partnership with other key APCA educational members, invites schools to participate in real-time ozone monitoring, using unique monitoring kits called Zikuas. Staff is available year round for presentations to teachers and students and to assist in ozone monitoring.
