Birmingham council members promote healthy lifestyles through events

Two Birmingham City Council members are taking steps to encourage better health among residents.

Councilwoman Lashunda Scales is joining the nationwide campaign, "Let's Move," designed to eliminate childhood obesity. Scales will host the District 1 Health Awareness Fair Saturday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the Northeast YMCA on Red Lane Road. The event, which is open to the public, includes free vision and dental screenings.

Another health-centered activity occurred today at Center Street Middle School where 300 students will participate in a six-week program that includes weight training, jumping rope, running a mile and completing health quizzes.

Councilwoman Carole Smitherman co-sponsored a community health fair this afternoon as part of the event at the school on 1832 Center Way South.

The fair included free health screenings blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass, dental, hearing, and vision. Other sponsors of the initiative are: Alabama Partners for Clean Air, District 6, Birmingham YMCA, Papa Murphy's Pizza, Personal Best and Walgreens.
